Food Sensitivities

Food sensitivities are being identified more and more as one underlying cause of a variety of health problems and symptoms.

Food sensitivities are different from food allergies, which is an acute/intense immune response: swelling, hives, vomiting, wheezing. Can be near-fatal, or fatal. Counter-acted with epinephrine injections: usually nuts, shellfish, wheat, soy, milk.

Food sensitivities can promote a variety of symptoms which may or may not be obviously related to a certain food or foods. Chronic pain, headache, disruptions in digestion like bloating, constipation, diarrhea and acid reflux, infertility, arthritis, PMS and menstrual pain. These symptoms can be significantly relieved when the food sensitivity is identified and the food is eliminated from the diet.

The Gluten-Free diet has become so popular as a way to control symptoms that many health care providers and nutrition educators are providing testing and resources, while restaurants food manufacturers are finding a new market for gluten free products, and they’re becoming more and more widely available.

While the practice of avoiding gluten can help some people find some relief, it often doesn’t do enough to completely resolve the symptoms that prompted the lifestyle change to begin with. Other very common food sensitivities include corn, soy, sugar, dairy products, and eggs. Many people can’t handle wheat but oats are OK for them, even though it is a gluten food. Some people are sensitive to all grains, including rice.

Because sugar is one of the more universal food sensitivities that often goes unidentified, a gluten-free regimen can be only marginally affective because many people load up on gluten-free sweets and think they are less detrimental. Also, corn is a common substitution for those avoiding gluten, and it is rarely well-tolerated because so much of the corn supply is genetically modified now.
